Michael studied law in Hamburg, Germany and at Victoria University of Wellington. He holds a Master of Laws with distinction.


Michael joined EMA Legal as a Senior Solicitor in February 2016. Prior to this, Michael held positions in New Zealand and overseas as in-house Counsel in the private and public sector, including New Zealand Police, the Hamburg Employment Court and Hamburg Chamber of Commerce, as well working in private practice for national and multi-national law firms.


Michael frequently represents clients at mediation (Employment/MBIE, Human Rights Commission, and Privacy Commissioner) and the Employment Relations Authority. He has specific knowledge and expertise of industries such as IT, retail/sales, manufacturing, construction, recruitment/temping, health care and the public service. Michael advises small and medium size businesses as well as multi-national and overseas corporates on contentious and non-contentious employment-related matters. Michael has particular expertise in the areas of post-employment obligations (restraints of trade, etc.) disciplinary matters, performance management, restructuring, absenteeism, drug and alcohol testing and creation of employment agreements and policies. Michael also frequently conducts complex investigations into allegations of workplace bullying and/or harassment on behalf of clients. 


Clients value Michael’s approach towards identifying the client’s particular needs and formulating robust yet pragmatic strategies that cater for his clients’ needs and have regard to the commercial and practical realities of running a business. He is a frequent speaker at HR/ER conferences and contributes articles on employment-related topics.
