Forum: Improving Productivity

Discussion and solutions for the productivity conundrum
Come and listen to the Productivity Commission’s Paul Conway as he outlines the broad reasons New Zealand businesses have generally struggled to improve productivity.

Against the background of ongoing changes in technology and the global trading environment, he will also put forward a number of high-level suggestions aimed at improving firms’ performance, and the New Zealand policy environment.

He says getting public policy right requires a deep understanding of New Zealand's productivity track record and potential in the 21st century global economy.

The presentation is based on Paul’s recent paper: “Can the Kiwi fly: achieving productivity lift-off in New Zealand”.

Paul is currently on sabbatical from the New Zealand Productivity Commission where he is the Director of Economics & Research. He leads the Commission’s work on understanding the reasons for New Zealand’s poor productivity track record.
Much of this work is focused on firm-level productivity and understanding the obstacles New Zealand businesses face in using technology to improve performance.
Paul has strong international experience and has previously worked with the OECD, the World Bank, Westpac and the Reserve Bank of New Zealand.
