This two-day course is a must for any business where plant and machinery is in operation, and anyone wanting to understand how to comply with WorkSafe NZ’s Safe Use of Machinery Harm Reduction Programme.

What you’ll learn:

Reducing machinery-related injuries is a high priority for businesses and regulators. WorkSafe NZ’s ‘Safe Use of Machinery Harm Reduction Programme’ has been established to help actively manage the hazards associated with machinery operation and maintenance. This course uses this framework to guide you in how to understand and effectively manage the risks when purchasing, installing, operating, maintaining, cleaning and repairing machinery.

After, you’ll be able to…
  • Understand the need to manage machinery risks. 
  • Evaluate the lifecycle of machinery risks that arise in the installation, use, inspection, cleaning, maintenance, repair, modifications and decommissioning of plant and machinery. 
  • Involve your workers, representatives and other stakeholders in machinery risk assessments. 
  • Identify, analyse and explain the various types of machinery risks; the methods available to control risks; the common types of machinery controls available; Health related risks around noise, hazardous substances, ergonomics, clean air etc; common safe systems of work with machinery. 
  • Convey the importance of locking out plant and equipment.
  • Understanding contractor management risks and the need to consult, co-ordinate and co-operate with other organisations with operational machinery risks;
  • How unintentional human interaction with machinery risks can lead to harm.
NZQA Unit Standard (optional)

18410, Version 5, Level 4: Credits 4.
Manage Hazard identification and control on plant and machinery.

Learners c
an expect to do an additional 26 hours of self-directed learning to complete this unit standard.

Note: This is not an NZQA approved course, however learners that achieve the unit standard attached to this course will have this added to their NZ Record of Achievement from NZQA.​​​​​​
