Chief Executive

Alasdair Thompson ACA, PGDipPP, JP

Alasdair, Chief Executive Officer of the Employers & Manufacturers Association (Northern) is a member of the APEC Business Advisory Council and Managing Director of Linrick Investments (NZ) Ltd.

He was formerly Mayor of the Thames Coromandel District Council, a member of the Waikato Regional Council Land Transport Committee, a director of Power New Zealand Ltd, Health Waikato Ltd and Commissioner - Waikato Area Health Board.

He received the Queen’s New Zealand Commemorative Medal for Service to New Zealand.

Key Managers

Bruce Goldsworthy

Bruce manages the Association’s Advocacy and Manufacturer’s Divisions and represents EMA Northern on a number of Community Liaison Groups.

He is one of the longest serving Association employees, having worked with the NZ Manufacturers Federation, the Auckland Manufacturers Association and now the EMA for over 30 years, in a variety of roles.

Bruce has a keen interest in cycle racing and has been involved in NZ teams up to Olympic Games level.  He is a Past President and Life member of the National Federation and in recognition of his role as Commissioner Cycling at the 1990 Commonwealth Games received the Queen’s New Zealand Commemorative Medal for Service to New Zealand.

David Lowe LLB

David, Manager Advisory Services for EMA, is responsible for providing employment-related support and advice to businesses through a team of 30 advisors, consultants and lawyers.  David presents at many events and seminars keeping businesses up-to-date.  He also works with law-makers and others to ensure employment-related laws support the success of business.

David is as an experienced human resource and employment relations practitioner having worked in the transport, finance, telecommunications and central government sectors.  David was responsible for employment relations at Spotless Services dealing with 8,500 employees at 3,000 sites and over 40 collective employment agreements.  David has also been National Human Resources Manager for Stagecoach New Zealand, now NZ Bus.

David has qualifications in law and public policy economics and was for a time private secretary to the Rt Hon Bill Birch and to the Rt Hon Helen Clark.

Paul Jarvie

Paul Jarvie, Manager of Occupational Health and Safety for EMA is also the National Manager for the NZ Institute of Safety Management (NZISM).

He was formerly a Physiotherapist working in both public and private sectors. He has researched and  delivered a wide range of products and services for EMA members.

He is constantly being used by Government agencies in their planning and implementation of national strategic plans and programmes in the occupational health and safety areas as well as ACC.

Gilbert Peterson MA (Hons)

Gilbert, Communications Manager and EMA’s scribe, joined the association in 1999 after 12 years with the NZ Manufacturers Federation in Wellington (NZMF has since been absorbed into Business NZ).  Gilbert edits and publishes EMA’s monthly magazine, EMA Business Plus, and writes articles, speeches and media statements on the whole gamut of issues affecting EMA’s member interests.  He also oversees www.ema.co.nz and gets involved with a lot of the lobbying work the association does in the drive for greater business growth and higher standards of living.

Marie Hasler

Public Relations Manager

Marie joined EMA after a 12-year political career as Member of Parliament for Waitakere, and Minister of the Crown.

She has been with EMA since 2004, first as a learning contractor, before joining the membership team for a couple of years, followed by her appointment as Public Relations Manager.   

Her role includes generating public awareness of EMA’s role and activities within the business and wider community and promoting EMA’s extensive range of services to members; providing PR support to EMA business units; public speaking engagements; liaison with media, and facilitating opportunities for lawmakers to hear the concerns of EMA members through forums, seminars and business events.

Brian Cooley

Brian, Manager AdviceLine, has had ten years experience in banking and administration and five years experience in the recruitment field, working for three major UK agencies, before a change of direction with the British Standards Institution involved with the monitoring of European Standards libraries.

In 1999 he returned to New Zealand, after 11½ years overseas, and joined the EMA AdviceLine team, as an Employment Relations Advisor, becoming team leader in 2001. Since then, Brian has greatly expanded his knowledge and capabilities within employment relations and has an excellent overall understanding of the obligations and pressures involved in today’s employment environment.
