Consumer Price Index Information (Updated Quarterly)

The consumers price index (CPI), New Zealand's best known measure of inflation, measures the rate of price change of goods and services purchased by households.

The CPI consists of a basket of goods and services that represent purchases made by households. The goods and services in the basket, and their relative importance, are reviewed every three years to ensure the basket remains up to date.

This survey includes information on the following -

  • people employed, unemployed and not in labour force - actual, seasonally adjusted and trend
  • total people employed, unemployed and not in labour force by age group, ethnic group regional council area
  • people employed by sex and industrial activity of place of employment
  • persons employed full-time and part-time - seasonally adjusted
  • the jobless (those without a job and wanting a job)
  • total actual hours worked
  • household statistics
  • underemployment.

Quarterly Employment Survey

Quarterly Employment Survey Information (Updated Quarterly)

Employment is an important measure of economic activity. The trends in the number of people employed and in hourly earnings provide a weathervane on New Zealand's economic situation. The source for this economic indicator is the Quarterly Employment Survey. The purpose of the Quarterly Employment Survey is to provide a produce quarterly estimates for men and women of the:

  • average hourly and average gross weekly wages and salaries
  • average weekly paid ordinary and overtime hours
  • number of people in full and part time jobs
  • total hours paid for and total earnings paid out for one week.
