NZQA and assessment information

Private Training Establishment

EMA Learning is registered by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) as a private training establishment under the Education Act 1989, and its subsequent amendments.  The EMA Business School is a unit within EMA Learning.  We provide education, training and assessment in a variety of domains that make up the New Zealand Qualifications ‘Framework’.  The accreditation within these domains allows EMA Learning to assess participants against NZQA Unit Standards, up to Level 6 in some domains, and successful participants can claim credits for NZQA’s Record of Learning.

Assessment Requirements

In order to gain assessment credits/certification for formally assessed courses, you must complete to the minimum standard all requirements for the particular course you are enrolled in.  For most of the formal course assessment you will be required to participate in your own time.  Some of the assessments may involve direct application in the context of your own workplace.

Assessment fees for Unit Standard based courses

EMA Members
It is not compulsory for course participants to undertake unit standards assessment. However, if you wish to take advantage of EMA’s offer, assessment and reporting fees for the stated units is included in the stated course fee (to EMA Members only). If you wish to be assessed against unit standards not specified under the short course category, refer to Additional Unit Standard Assessment below.

To take advantage of this FREE unit standard assessment, complete the documentation supplied on the day of the course or contact EMA Learning through assessment@ema.co.nz

Non Member charges
To undertake the formal assessment of the unit standard associated to a course, you need to pay a standard assessment fee of $90 (including GST) to cover administration and processing plus the $1.55 (including GST) per unit standard credit.

Additional Unit Standard Assessment
If you have identified other unit standards that you feel you may have the skills and knowledge in then complete the documentation supplied on the day of the course and you need to pay a standard assessment fee of $90 (including GST) to cover administration and processing plus the $1.55 (including GST) per unit standard credit.

Recognition of Current Competence (RCC)

You may already have the skills and knowledge in a particular unit or module that forms part of an EMA Learning course.  If so you have the option of a Recognition of Current Competence RCC.  You can apply for RCC in courses that are based on Framework unit standards or on non-Framework ‘local’ components.

In either case, you will need to show clear evidence that you have a competent grasp of the discipline or industry aspect. In most cases this will involve you completing the course assessments to demonstrate competence.

How do I apply for RCC?

  • Obtain the latest version of the units you want to ‘claim’ competence in. Study the elements and performance criteria, available at www.nzqa.govt.nz/framework.
  • Contact EMA Learning through assessment@ema.co.nz and ask for an application form for Recognition of Current Competence.
  • Return the completed form to assessment@ema.co.nz
  • You will be contacted by one of the assessors who will explain the requirements of the assessment.  A copy of the assessment and relevant documentation will be given to you.
  • Complete the assessment and return these with all supporting material to your assessor at the EMA Learning Centre.
  • Your assessor will give you an assessment decision and any feedback necessary.
  • EMA Learning will advise NZQA of any credits gained.

RCC Fees

If you wish to undertake RCC assessment you need to pay a standard assessment fee of $90 (including GST) to cover Administration and Processing plus the $1.55 (including GST) per unit standard credit.

Credit Transfer

If you have already undertaken studies, either with EMA Learning or another institution, you may be able to put this towards your new qualification.  There are two options:

To transfer credits from previously completed unit standards to your current EMA Learning programme you will need to produce documentary evidence such as your record of learning.  If you want to transfer credits from another training provider (e.g. Massey University), please deal directly with that provider.  If in doubt, ask your tutor, or contact EMA Learning.

Participant Support

If you are having difficulty with any aspects of your course or course assignments, you should discuss your concerns with your tutor.  Your tutor may be able to help you, or refer you to appropriate personnel either within or outside the organisation.

Questions and queries can be directed to either: assessment@ema.co.nz for assessment issues or quality@ema.co.nz in matters of course quality.
